Akira Kanatsu
3rd Year Graduate Student
Ph.D. Developmental Psychology Program

I joined the MFAS lab in 2003.  Since then, I have been involved in many aspects of the project and learned various research skills such as conducting surveys and interviews, data coding and cleaning, data management, and data analyses.
I have also presented the study in various conferences.  My research interests are to understand for immigrant families the impact of cultural processes on parenting practices, parent-child relations, and adolescents' academic, behavioral, and mental adjustment.  For my master's thesis, I examined Asian immigrant fathers and mothers who were identified as the primary caregivers by the adolescents, and compared their parenting styles and the effects of parenting practices on adolescents.

I am currently in my 3rd year of graduate school in the Developmental Psychology program at Univeristy of California, Riverside. My research interests consist of studying parent-child communication, adolescent development, social support from family and friends, and romantic relationship satisfaction. For my master's thesis, I examined the effects of parent-child communication and respect with both mothers and fathers on Asian immigrant adolescent outcomes. My involvement in the lab has consisted of collecting data, obtaining student grades and test scores from high schools, and I am currently supervising the research assistants.

I'm a graduate student of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside. I'm very interested in Asian American adolescents' social and emotional functioning problems, such as anxiety and depression, and the parental behaviors that might have impact on these problems.  I currently coordinate with the project director on supervising research assistants, recruiting new research assistants, being in charge of survey coding, and interviewing parents and their adolescent kids.

Ph.D. Developmental Psychology Program

I am currently in my 3rd year in the Developmental Psychology graduate program.  One of my research interests includes studying mental health outcomes among Asian American adolescents and how they may be impacted by parenting.  For my master's thesis, I examined the effects of affective interpretations of parental control on adolescent outcomes. Working in the MFAS lab under Dr. Chao has helped me to learn and advance my research skills and produce work that I presented at various conferences.  I have also been involved in the lab by managing the data collection on parent surveys, supervising research assistants, and obtaining student grade reports and test scores from schools.

I'm a graduate student of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside. I am currently helping Dr. Chao on her longitudinal study on bilingual children's language brokering and psychological outcomes as well as helping to maintain the MFAS webpage. My research interests include studying Asian American psychological outcomes in respect to identity development and perceived discrimination. In addition, I am also interested in investigating Asian American fatherhood and masculinity issues. I hope to be able to contribute to the growing literature in the professional community and conduct further research on Asian American families.
